Somatic Experiencing

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing is a body-centered therapeutic approach designed to help individuals recover from trauma and stress-related disorders. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, this method focuses on the body’s natural ability to heal itself by releasing the physical and emotional tension stored within the body. Unlike traditional talk therapy, Somatic Experiencing emphasizes the importance of tuning into the body’s sensations to process and resolve trauma at a physiological level.

How Does Somatic Experiencing Work?

Somatic Experiencing works by guiding you to become more aware of your body’s internal sensations, which can provide valuable insights into how trauma has impacted your nervous system. During our sessions, I will help you gently explore these sensations without forcing or rushing the process. This gradual approach allows your body to safely release the energy associated with traumatic experiences, helping to restore balance and resilience to your nervous system.

The process often involves tracking bodily sensations, practicing grounding techniques, and using breathwork to help regulate your body’s response to stress. By focusing on the body’s innate ability to heal, Somatic Experiencing helps you move through traumatic memories without becoming overwhelmed, enabling you to process and integrate these experiences more effectively.

This method is particularly effective for individuals who have experienced trauma that is stored in the body, manifesting as chronic pain, tension, or other physical symptoms. This method is also beneficial for individuals suffering from anxiety and depression. Through Somatic Experiencing, you can reconnect with your body in a safe and supportive way, ultimately leading to a greater sense of well-being and emotional freedom.
